Abstract Realism & Faith
Bill depicted the human form, architecture and the home in the abstract. The ‘Dreaming Castle’ was Frana’s studio in Radford Dip, Plymouth, the romance of this artistic endeavour is represented by the gondolas. ‘The Bedsitter’ conveys the loneliness and gloom of his father-in-law’s old age ravaged by mental illness and trauma from military service in WW2.
A man of faith, who wore it lightly and with a wry and dry humour, saw the mysticism of life and one’s place in it through the vastness of the world’s oceans. Childhood trips with his Uncle Adam to The Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum showed him the boundless energy and innovation of the imagination. He found freedom through the seas and art.
