In life, Bill sought, celebrated, and encouraged adventure. At 16 and a half he joined the merchant service as a cadet and went to sea. His yearning for adventure came in part from his mother Jeanie, who in 1930 sailed from Glasgow to the Port of New York on the SS Transylvania. Five years later, she returned home on the same ship, this time with her young son Billy. ‘Farewell to the Old Country’ is a celebration of adventure. It depicts the SS Transylvania and all the hope and promise of Jeanie’s transatlantic voyage.

Bill’s poem ‘The Small Town’ evokes the longing and spirit of the adventurer.

I travelled far to a distant star
A million miles and more.
I travelled far to a distant star
To the sea and the a burning shore….’
